	Baylor University Celebrates First-ever Heisman Award Winner Robert Griffin III New York City, NY. – Robert Griffin III – affectionately known as RG3 – Baylor's junior quarterback, was named winner of the 2011 Heisman Trophy at tonight's Heisman ceremony in New York City. RG3 is the first Heisman winner in Baylor history and only the 3rd Baylor player to significantly factor into the balloting in the Heisman's 75-year history. (Quarterback Larry Isbell finished seventh in 1951, and quarterback Don Trull finished fourth in 1963, losing the award to Roger Staubach.) This has been an exciting year for Baylor University. Sports and news personalities nationwide are talking about the values we hold dear and how they are represented in the life of RG3, an exemplary student and athlete. With the announcement of plans to build a new on-campus stadium and a bowl bid for the second straight year, Baylor Nation has much to celebrate. Thank you Baylor Nation for your support of our student-athletes and all our students who share a dedication to excellence at Baylor University. Congratulations to coach Art Briles and the 9-3 Baylor Bears on an outstanding season, and Sic 'em Bears as we enter the Alamo Bowl in pursuit of win number 10. "Dallas" veterans sign on for TNT remake

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - TNT has lured three original "Dallas" stars to join the cast of its similarly titled pilot, which is an update of the classic series.

Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray have joined the cast of the new project, which focuses on the Ewing offspring -- J.R. Ewing's (Hagman) son, John Ross, and the adopted son of Bobby (Duffy) and Pam Ewing, Christopher -- as they clash over the future of the family dynasty. Gray played J.R.'s wife, Sue Ellen, in the original series, which ran from 1978-91.

Big Willis Supporter Condemns New Administration on Radio

Long-time radio personality Julious McGruder, a veteran of activist politics in Phillips County, denounced the new administration Sunday morning on his radio program. On the early Sunday morning talk show, McGruder attacked the new Mayor for failing to keep early promises and expressed dissatisfaction with some of Willis's early personnel decisions, which includes the hiring of Anthony "Deuce" Banks and Bobby "Ga Ga" Jones as city department heads. Both are believed to have had brushes with law enforcement agencies.

Contacted by phone, McGruder said, "You just don't promise something and then not deliver."

The City Council will meet on Monday, January 31, 2011 at 6 pm.

Re: Port Authority Terminates Bagley; No New Jobs Announced

HELENA-WEST HELENA- No new jobs were announced and one job was eliminated at

the monthly meeting of the Phillips County Port Authority Monday night.

Executive Director Martin Chaffin reported that Rod Miller continues to work

to get financing for his proposed $1.8 billion facility at the Helena

Harbor. Miller and Chaffin have been working on this project for over two

years.

Chaffin also updated the Port Authority Board on some road repair needs and

the pipe unloading operation that has slowed greatly in recent months.

After hearing the financial report and concluding the normal monthly

business, Port Member Charles Sibley began discussion of terminating the

Port Authority’s relationship with Andrew Bagley, who has worked with the

port on its local media relations. Bagley had no notice that the item would

be up for discussion at that meeting and was out of town at a funeral. The

item was not on the Board’s agenda. A motion was made by Port Member Jim

Frazier and seconded by Gordon Cunningham to terminate Bagley. A voice vote

was held and the vote was unanimous. Those in attendance were Sibley,

Frazier, Cunningham, William Quiney, Henry Richmond, Tommie Shackleford,

Todd Stewart, Tyrone Staton and John McClinton. The January Port report

from Bagley will be the last issued by him.

Contacted the next day, Bagley was informed of the board’s action. He said,

“Over two years ago the Port Authority was under assault in the local press

and its major funding source was under attack. Some of the same men who

voted to fire me Monday night while I was out of town at a funeral of a very

close friend approached me about getting the message of the Port out to the

people. I have some expertise in this area as a political scientist and

former newspaper reporter. I also own a large database of contacts. I

agreed to assist the Port Authority in their time of need.”

Bagley continued, “The Port Authority got what it paid for. In that time,

the port’s message concerning its work was effectively disseminated and the

coverage from the established local press improved. Information regularly reached and was reported by regional and state media outlets. With my assistance, the Port’s message was delivered unfiltered directly to hundreds via email and

indirectly to thousands via blogs and social networking sites. With me at

the helm of the Port’s portion of the sales tax renewal campaign, the tax

was renewed by a large margin giving the Port a large source of stable

funding. It is surprising that the decision to terminate me occurred since

no member of the Port Authority Board expressed disapproval concerning my

work. I don’t believe this vote has anything to do with the quality of work

that was done because that work speaks for itself.”

In closing, Bagley said, “I wish Martin Chaffin well in his efforts to

recruit industry to this area. I live here. I grew up here, and I want

what is best for this community. I remain hopeful that his efforts will

bear fruit. However, I believe that part of the reason this community has

not been successful in job recruitment is because of leadership like the

kind exhibited Monday night. Leadership that doesn’t take into account job

performance and moves against those it needed just months earlier without

warning or the courtesy of a chance to hear any concerns hampers our abilities to maximize the talent present in this community.

I understand politics. I just wish I had been given the respect of having this debate and action when

I could have been there instead of when I was at the visitation and funeral

of a very special friend. It is also customary to give a person a notice on

such matters, which the Port Authority Board chose not to do in this case.

I will continue to work hard for the future of this community and will

await opportunities in the future where my skills will once again be

utilized.”

Dear Mr. Willis:

You spoke to my brother, Andre, today regarding many things. You, again, accused us (Betty Brimley, E. Dion Wilson and me) and the "law office" of engaging in exactly what you are doing, i. e. funding Bobby Jones and others in the "vote hauling program" whereby people are paid to vote for a certain list of candidates. We have witnessed your list being handed to the paid voters upstairs in the courthouse and being corralled by your workers who then operate the machinery. Supporting a slate of candidates is fine. Paying the person to vote for the slate is unlawful and unethical. Vote hauling is a perversion of GOTV. It is the lowest form of getting out the vote.

You should be very familiar with these antics. You filed suit against the Honorable State Senator Jack Crumbly in St. Francis County a few years ago accusing him of facts of this very nature.

You swore to Andre and Betty Brimley that you had nothing to do with Bobby Jones and the crew. The crew is Larry Gray, Daymon Cole, Larry Suggs, Anthony "Duece" Banks and many others. I am told that Duece has a check in the amount of $100.00 from State Representative Clark Hall that you provided to "Duece."

I am privity to know that you met with Anthony Banks, Larry Gray and Bobby Jones at length the other day at your headquarters. Chalk S. Mitchell joined you in that meeting. Later, you and Chalk met for a while after your minions had been dispatched to other locales.

My query at this point is, does this photo refresh your recollection as to who is working for you and the actions they are taking? I do not care who you hire. I would, however, like for the election to be a fair and open process which is reflective of the voluntary will of the people impacted.

The attached photo clearly depicts your BMW, Bobby Jones' Lexus, Duece's Yukon (SUV) and Larry's Ford Pickup Truck at your campaign headquarters on the day in question.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan will speak at 6 p.m. tonight at the Statehouse Convention Center as part of the Frank and Kula Kumpuris Distinguished Lecture series.

He plans to make news by calling for disclosure of test score data differentiated by indidvidual teachers.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan will call for all states and school districts to make public whether their instructors are doing enough to raise students' test scores and to share other school-level information with parents, according to a text of a speech he is scheduled to make Wednesday.

"The truth is always hard to swallow, but it can only make us better, stronger and smarter," according to remarks he plans to deliver in Little Rock, Ark. "That's what accountability is all about — facing the truth and taking responsibility."

The lack of public accountability in California's schools compared with those in some other states could have been a factor Tuesday in the state's failure to win any money in the federal government's competitive Race to the Top education grant program.

In addition to test score information, Duncan will also advocate releasing data on school funding and college completion and student loan default rates, among other things, as ways to increase public awareness about schools and teacher performance.

"If it was up to me and the law allowed it, I would put out student attendance data and hold parents accountable," he will say.

Sixty-five years ago today the first-ever atomic bombing occurred on planet Earth when the B29 Super fortress named Enola Gay dropped its lone nuclear payload over Hiroshima. Three days later on Aug. 9, 1945, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki forcing the Japanese to surrender.
   The number of WWII veterans is declining rapidly leaving a precious fewer number like Doug Simmons, Frank Griffin and Jimmy Nichols to recall their whereabouts about the time the bombs fell and the subsequent Victory in Japan was celebrated on Sept. 2, 1945.
   Griffin, who rose to the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy, said Thursday he was aboard an aircraft carrier during the time of the bombing and when the surrender occurred.
During the waning days of the war the Japanese resorted to suicide bombings by The Kamikaze pilots who zeroed in on ships in the South Pacific.
Kamikaze, which means "Divine Wind", was the last ditch effort Japanese deployed to fend off their inevitable defeat.
Griffin said he was aboard the carrier U.S.S. Randolph and witnessed a Kamikaze pilot slamming into another carrier, the Franklin.
"I was in sight of the Franklin when a Kamikaze pilot hit the ship. The ship was badly damaged but was not sunk," Griffin said.
Griffin said Japanese aerial attacks severely damaged another carrier, the Bunker Hill.
"I was supposed to go aboard the Bunker Hill," Griffin said. "After it was hit the ship had to be towed back port at Seattle (Wash.)."
On another occasion, Griffin said, "We watched a Japanese pilot land in the ocean near a destroyer. He got out of the plane and waved a white flag."
Simmons, a Naval lieutenant, said he served aboard the U.S.S. Trapper, a supply ship that accompanied minesweepers. At the time of the bombings and subsequent VJ celebration Simmons was in San Francisco. He, too, had expected to get the call for duty aboard a ship bound for Tokyo when the bombings brought an end to the war.
"There were 20 ships" in the minesweeper tandem, Simmons said. They were made of wood because the mines would have discharged against iron ships, he said.
Simmons recalled his ship and crew surviving a typhoon that sprang up while his vessel was at Okinawa leaving left six feet of water in the lowest level of the ship.
"It nearly sunk us," Simmons said. "We went to Guam to have it repaired."
Griffin and Simmons, both of whom saw extensively duty in the South Pacific, said they were thankful the war was brought to a conclusion despite the aftermath from the nuclear blasts that killed and maimed thousands.
Had there been no atomic bombings, American and Allied troops likely faced the grim prospects of having to move by ships into Tokyo Bay, they said.
Sergeant Nichols fought in the European Theater with the Third Armored Division headed by Gen. George Patton. He was wounded his second day in combat.
"I fought with Patton – Ole Blood and Guts," Nichols said. "Our blood, his guts.
"I had just left Fort Sam Houston waiting from my next orders," Nichols said when he learned about the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.
"I expected to be sent to the South Pacific," Nichols said.

A conservative think tanker who supports school choice programs -- charters, vouchers -- might surprise you with an op-ed in today's Times.

He notes that a major study of the country's oldest and most extensive charter school program, in Milwaukee, shows charter schoolers with advancement little different than that of students in conventional public schools.

This is just one of several evaluations of school choice programs that have failed to show major improvements in test scores, but the size and age of the Milwaukee program, combined with the rigor of the study, make these results hard to explain away.

So let's not try to explain them away. Why not instead finally acknowledge that standardized test scores are a terrible way to decide whether one school is better than another? This is true whether the reform in question is vouchers, charter schools, increased school accountability, smaller class sizes, better pay for all teachers, bonuses for good teachers, firing of bad teachers — measured by changes in test scores, each has failed to live up to its hype.

It should come as no surprise. We've known since the landmark Coleman Report of 1966, which was based on a study of more than 570,000 American students, that the measurable differences in schools explain little about differences in test scores. The reason for the perpetual disappointment is simple: Schools control only a small part of what goes into test scores.

We are back to parents and homes, of course. The more controversial notion in this piece is the writer's suggestion that parents should be given the ability to choose the types of schools they want for their kids whether objective measures demonstrate they work or not. Since the conservatives who called for strict accountability through testing for charter schools have determined the charter school movement, as a whole, doesn't, a new strategy is necessary. It's back to vouchers, which is where it all began.
